Dear Friends,
The question that most people are asking us is what the current Aero California situation is and… well, we are still in Limbo! There is supposed to be a resolution before the 14th May, however for the time being, all the staff are still on forced, unpaid vacation, and La Paz Airport looks very sad indeed with all the planes sitting neatly aligned. Aero Mexico is currently flying from LAX to La Paz, and I have actually heard of several people getting reasonable rates, hovering around US$250 round trip. The refund situation is still not very clear either, so we are hoping to have some answers next week. The current repercussions to La Paz as a whole have been quite devastating, not only for the operators, hotels, car rental companies, whom have suffered a frighteningly high number of cancellations, but also the local economy. Aero California is one of the largest employers of this capital, and have left 3,000 employees "on hold", with several families where both wife & husband both work for the Airline. We hope that the Head Political Honchos come to an agreement, not only for the best interest of tourism, but of the local survival & growth.

It seems like we are having a pretty early summer in La Paz this year, with various days coming close to 100oF already, and the water temperature seems to warming between 70 and 76oF.

The area of Espiritu Santo is still seeing a big number of Yellowtail and Amberjack, and the vast majority of the Yellowtail are all very respectable, between 25 & 40 lbs.

There are also some toad Cabrilla & Pargo! Our friend Dennis Haussler shot a 44 lbs Cabrilla last week, which was 18 pounds heavier than current world record!

We just came down the stretch from Loreto to La Paz on a 65 foot Hatteras on which we are starting to promote these live aboards, and we have to say that it is one of the most beautiful Sea of Cortez runs I have done. We didn't see another boat for days, and had most of the islands completely to our selves, including Montserrat, Catalana, Santa Cruz & San Jose. The visibility was approximately 20 to 30 feet through out, and there was a lot of life out there. Mostly bottom fish, and I was surprised not to see more Yellowtail further north than we did. Having said that, we had a good run of Yellowtail at the north point of Santa Cruz and Catalana, all producing several 30 to 40 lb fish. We didn't see any big schools however.. oh, well… See what happens when you get spoilt… We had also heard some reports of Yellowfin Tuna outside of Santa Cruz, but unfortunately, could not concrete that fact.

At south end of Cerralvo, East Cape and the 88, we have been having various reports of Striped marlin already, several Dorado and football size tunas have started to show up, although the number of catches seems to have being gone. Maybe there is too much bait in the water for them to eat.

Cabo is pretty much off the chart right now when it comes to Stripped Marlin. Seems like most boats that want them are getting them. We are also pleased to report a high increase of catch and release. Most folks just want a nice picture that they can show their jealous friend which is good for all.

Last week we saw Roberto and Russ hit the water looking for some good Ceviche fish and boated 26 Sierras averaging 18/24 inches. They ran into a large school about two miles up the pacific side and never went more then a mile out. They also caught one Cabrilla and one Yellowtail and all were well prepared…. Can you say fish tacos?

So, if you are thinking of future vacations, we currently have two new adventures brewing, so let us know asap if you are interested in:

  • Loreto to La Paz or La Paz to Loreto Live Aboard

  • Spear fishing or sport fishing the legendary Tethis Bank outside of Magdalena Bay on a high powered 26 foot sport fisher.

  • Stand by… more to come soon!

Safe diving and look forward to seeing you in The Peace!
